India’s economic growth objectives on improving the human development indices and greater formalization of the economy has now given an opportunity to create meaningful employment (Fiscal Policy Strategy Statement, pg. 12). Along with the creation of more jobs in the private sector, an estimated 2,083 lakh central government jobs 2018 will be generated in the next years as per our Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley. He announced that the work force in central government offices would increase to 35.67 lakh in 2018, as opposed to 32.84 lakh in 2016.
Government Jobs in 2018 will be spread across the departments of Home Ministry, Police under Central Government, External Affairs, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Indian Postal Service, Ministry of Environment, Minority Affairs, Personnel Ministry and Ministry of Water Resources.
Focus on Employability rather than Employment
According to the Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions; Jitendra Singh, the present Government’s focus is on creating employable workforce rather than employment opportunities. The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship has been created recently to take action on this Agenda. This ministry which had only 53 available jobs in 2016 will have 2,027 opportunities in the next year. The sheer investment in this ministry signifies that the Government is trying to move towards a more citizen centric governance, as was opened by Jitendra Singh.
How does this Impact the Youth?
Apart from more job opportunities in the Government Sector for the youth, there are multiple initiatives for investment into increasing the employability rate of youth in India. According to ICEF Monitor a report published in 2015, as many as 75% of graduates in India are not considered to have skills that are needed to be employable.
The Government has allocated a budget of Rs 2,200 crore for skill strengthening of youth this year. The ‘SANKALP’ Scheme with a budget of Rs 4,000 crore, has been launched to provide market relevant training to 3.5 crore youth across the country. So, if you are looking for opportunities, it’s time to gear up to develop your skills and find Government Jobs in 2018.
